TNO Defence, Security and Safety is the title under which TNO operates as a strategic partner for the Dutch Ministry of Defence and makes innovative contributions to enhancing the security of the Netherlands both at home and abroad. It also use accumulated knowledge for foreign governments and for defence-related industries.

TNO Defense, Security and Safety focus on Defence in the broadest sense of the word and ψε involvement covers a range of activities: military operations, military equipment, command and operational decision making, threat and protection, instruction and training. In the area of Security and Safety, the emphasis lies on combating crime, calamity and terrorism.

TNO Defence, Security and Safety also works for the aerospace and maritime sectors, markets in which defence is a vital aspect. In terms of aerospace, it concentrates largely on improving safety while for the maritime sector it focus on shipbuilding. It collaborate with the defence industry to develop innovative solutions.

TNO Defence, Security and Safety stakeholders include the Ministries of Defence, Home Affairs, Justice, Foreign Affairs as well as Transport, Public Works and Water Management, regional/national police forces and fire services, and defence-related industries such as Thales, Imtech, Stork, Damen, Boeing, Siemens, Ericsson, QinetiQ, Dutch Space and CMG.

TNO Defence, Security and Safety has a thousand employees who develop and apply knowledge in the form of advice, applied research and product innovation. TNO Defence, Security and Safety has three research locations: The Hague, Rijswijk and Soesterberg.
