The Rakshak Gypsy armoured patrol car was developed by the Indian Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) mainly for internal security operations and was shown for the first time in 1994. As of late 2007 there were no known exports of this vehicle. Description
The Rakshak Gypsy vehicle is based on the locally built Maruti Gypsy (4 × 4) light cross-country vehicle, although other types of light armoured vehicle (wheeled) can be modified to a similar standard.
The vehicle has been fitted with panels of 'Kackal' armoured steel and according to the manufacturer provides complete protection against penetration from 7.62 mm SLR and 7.62 mm AK-47 ball burst fire.
The power pack is at the front, the driver and commander are in the centre and the troop compartment is at the rear. The windscreen is of bulletproof glass as is the upper part of the forward-opening side doors.
The troop compartment is at the rear and the four men are carried two down either side on bench seats facing each other. In each side of the vehicle are two firing ports which, when not required, are covered by sliding shutters.
The troops enter and leave via two doors in the hull rear, each of which is provided with a circular firing port.
As the basic vehicle has been up-armoured the suspension has been upgraded, with one extra leaf being added at the front and three extra leafs at the rear.
