The IVECO Centauro (8 x 8) tank destroyer, now operational with the Italian Army, is fitted with a three-man power-operated turret designed and built by Otobreda, which is armed with a 105 mm low recoil rifled gun.
The long recoil 52 calibre gun is fitted with a thermal sleeve, integral fume extractor, muzzle reference system, a muzzle brake and fires standard 105 mm NATO tank ammunition including APFSDS.
The ordnance is autofrettaged and has a maximum recoil length of 710 mm. It has a vertical sliding breech mechanism that remains open after the weapon is fired and the empty cartridge case is ejected.
The Italian Army placed an order for 400 Centauro (8 x 8) tank destroyers with the first of these completed in November 1989 and with final deliveries being made in 1996.
The complete turret of the armed with the Otobreda 105 low recoil gun is now being offered for installation on a wide range of other chassis, both tracked and wheeled. Known applications include the Steyr-Daimler-Puch/SANTA BARBARA ASCOD full tracked vehicle which is now in quantity production for the Spanish Army and early in 1999 ordered by the Austrian Army under the local name of Ulan.
In production. In service with the Italian Army installed in Centauro (8 x 8) tank destroyer.
