The 60 mm High-velocity Gun System has been developed as a private venture by Otobreda and is installed in the Otobreda T 60/70 two-man turret which is described fully in the AFV turrets and cupolas section. This turret can be installed on a wide range of tracked and wheeled vehicles. As of mid-1999 there were no known production applications for this gun or turret system.
In 1997, the Otobreda T 60/70 turret built to production standard was fitted onto the Polish BWP 2000 infantry fighting vehicle for trials in Poland. More recently this turret has been installed on the chassis of the Dardo infantry combat vehicle which was ordered late in 1998 fitted with a two person 25 mm turret system.
The weapon has a 70 calibre autofrettaged ordnance and is fitted with a vertical sliding breech block and an electrically actuated firing system.
The recoil system is of the hydrospring type and is mounted concentrically to the barrel system, which enables quick replacement of the 60 mm rifled ordnance in the field with the use of first echelon tools.
The weapon is fitted with a twin automatic loading system which makes it possible to load and fire either APFSDS-T or HE rounds at any gun elevation with a rate of one round every 2 seconds.
The loading system consists of a twin symmetrical magazine, loading arm, round loading system and a loading control system. The magazine holds 32 rounds and can be loaded from inside the vehicle.
The loading arm receives the selected round (APFSDS-T or HE) from either magazine automatically moving step by step, and carries it in line with the gun barrel where a spring-actuated rammer seats it in the cartridge chamber.
The loading system is electrically operated and is controlled by an electric control system with a minimum number of electrical interlocks. The sequence of operations is controlled by interlocked mechanical devices so reducing the possibility of malfunctions to a minimum.
Development complete. Ready for production.
