The Borderer 4284 scout car has been developed as a private venture by Hotspur Armoured Products and was shown for the first time at the 1984 British Army Equipment Exhibition.
The Borderer scout car is based on the chassis of the Land Rover One Ten which has been modified and strengthened to accommodate the weight of the armoured hull.
The Hotspur steel armoured hull which fully encloses the engine and crew compartments has been designed to provide ballistic immunity at 25 m at an attack angle of 90º from ball ammunition fired from 7.62 mm type weapons and from point–blank attack by lighter weapons such as the 9 mm Sterling SMG, M1 carbine and .44 Magnum. The floor armour protects the crew from mine fragments and grenades.
The engine and transmission are at the front of the vehicle with the personnel compartment at the rear. The Borderer would normally have a crew of three, commander, gunner and driver, but up to five can
be carried if required.
The commander and driver sit to the rear of the engine and each has a windscreen to his front and side made of laminated armoured glass with anti–splinter screens of polycarbonate. The visors can be activated from inside the vehicle either manually or electrically. In each side of the hull is a single door that opens to the front, in the upper part of this is a bullet–proof vision block with a firing port underneath. There is also an emergency/loading hatch in the hull rear.
The petrol tank is under armour protection at the rear of the hull.
Mounted on the roof is a manually operated turret that can be traversed through 360º; this can be armed with a 7.62 mm general–purpose machine gun. The machine gun is aimed via a periscope in the forward part of the turret roof. The turret also has a single piece hatch cover that opens to the rear and vision blocks for
observation to the sides and rear. As an option a bank of four electrically operated smoke grenade dischargers can be mounted on either side of the turret. The Borderer can also be supplied with a fully rotating machine gun hatch or with a solid roof plate.
Optional equipment includes a run–flat tyre system, a night vision facility for the driver, a 24 V electrical system, a winch, a tow hook and front shackles, a self–sealing petrol tank, a full air–conditioning system, stop lamps, an intercom/siren, a public address system, powered steering and a fuel tank with an additional 55 litre capacity.
