The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), founded in 1958, is the world’s most prestigious private, not-for-profit membership organisation for the study of military strategy, arms control, regional security and conflict resolution. The IISS is independent and it alone decides what activities to conduct. It owes no allegiance to any government, or to any political or other organisation. As a result, the Institute is the primary source of accurate, objective information on international strategic issues for politicians and diplomats, foreign-affairs analysts, investment analysts, international business, economists, the military, defence commentators, journalists, academics and the informed public.

LEADING PUBLICATIONS

The IISS publishes:

* the authoritative annual The Military Balance, an inventory of the world’s armed forces

* Strategic Survey, an annual retrospective of the year’s political and military trends

* the Adelphi Paper monograph series, which provides in-depth analyses of general strategic questions and regional security

* a quarterly journal, Survival, widely acclaimed as the leading international journal of strategic issues

* Strategic Comments, containing short briefings on current strategic developments, which is widely syndicated to the international press.

WORLDWIDE MEMBERSHIP

Institute members, currently numbering around 2,500, are based in over 100 countries. From this broad base, the IISS is committed to promoting new thought and ideas on contemporary international strategic issues. The Institute’s work on the use of armed force, arms control, peacekeeping and conflict resolution, regional security and the changing pattern of international relations generally is widely regarded as at the forefront of modern strategic thinking. Corporate and Institutional members – around 200 of them – include research centres, media organisations, government ministries and agencies, staff colleges, investment departments and, increasingly, the business sector.

LIVELY DEBATE

A major Annual Conference for members is held in a different part of the world each year, and, in seeking to extend its habits of intellectual provocation and reasoned debate, the Institute regularly organises workshops and conferences of 20–45 participants in a wide range of international centres. These meetings involve a selection of business people, journalists, academics, government officials and independent analysts. IISS Strategic Debates, held before a large audience, involve two distinguished individuals arguing different sides of an important strategic issue.

RESEARCH AND ANALYSIS

The majority of IISS research is carried out by a team of Research Associates, complemented by the Directing Staff – who between them have wide expertise in arms control and military strategy, peacekeeping and conflict resolution, regional security, and all aspects of international relations. The Institute also occasionally recruits Research Fellows to follow particular strategic developments and to manage specific research projects.

Additionally, the Institute’s Information Department, comprising analysts specialising in defence economics, ground and naval forces and aerospace, performs an important service in providing accurate information on and analysis of military capabilities. The Institute has an online database which, in its final form, will contain the most extensive data available on quantities and types of weapons and equipment used by armed forces around the world, as well as comprehensive information on defence economics, including budgets, outlays, procurement and R&D.
