Combat Vehicle 90 represents a family of armoured combat vehicles developed by Hägglunds Vehicle AB (part of the Alvis Group) of Örnsköldsvik and Bofors AB of Karlskoga, Sweden. Hägglunds builds the chassis and Bofors supply the turret.
The development of the CV90 began in 1984 in response to the requirements outlined by the Swedish Army for a family of armoured combat vehicles with high tactical and strategic mobility, air defence and anti-tank capability, high survivability and protection. Production began in 1993 and over 850 vehicles have been ordered.
All welded steel hull can be upgraded with add-on armour, which protects against 30 mm APFSDS (armour piercing fin-stabilised discarding sabot) rounds. The vehicle has low radar, acoustic and infrared signature. A fire detection and extinguishing system is fitted and full nuclear, chemical and biological (NBC) protection is provided.
The CV 90 Infantry Fighting Vehicle is compatible with a range of armaments, sights and fire control systems to suit the mission requirement. All versions carry a crew of three, commander, driver and gunner together with up to eight soldiers.
Currently there are three versions of the CV 90 IFV. The CV 9025 is armed with a 25 mm Boeing Bushmaster or a Mauser MK 25 mm Model E cannon. The CV 9030 is the export variant and has been operational with the Norwegian Army since 1995. It is armed with a 30 mm Boeing Bushmaster II or a Mauser MK 30 mm Model F cannon. The 9030 has also been selected by the Swiss Army which requires 180 vehicles for delivery from 2002 - 2005. These will be fitted with Boeing 30mm/40mm Mk 44 cannon, Saab Tech UTAAS anti-aircraft sight and a battlefield management system. Finland has ordered 57 CV 9030 vehicles, out of a total requirement of 150. Patria Vehicles will build the vehicle turrets. The CV 9040 has been in service with the Swedish army since 1993 with 300 systems delivered and is armed with a 40 mm Bofors U70 cannon.
The CV 90105 anti-tank vehicle is fitted with a Giat TML 105 turret. The TML 105 turret is equipped with a two axis stabilised 105 mm CN 105 G2 NATO standard gun. The gun laying system is power stabilised and controlled by a digital computer. Secondary armament consists of a 7.62 mm coaxial machine gun and a roof/pintle mounted 7.62 mm machine gun. A Galix self- defence system is also fitted.
The turret provides protection against 7.62 mm weapons at any range and is fitted with a SAGEM SAVAN 15 stabilised sight. SAVAN 15 is a derivative of the sight developed for the Leclerc main battle tank. The gunner's sight can also be fitted with an infra-red charge-coupled device (IRCCD) thermal imaging system. The commander's station can be equipped with periscopes and panoramic stabilised sights.
The CV 9040 Anti Aircraft Vehicle is fitted with a reconnaissance radar and automatic threat evaluation. The vehicle is capable of engaging aerial targets, including helicopters, at ranges up to 4000 m. It is fitted with CelsiusTech UTAAS anti-aircraft gun sight which includes a thermal imager, laser rangefinder and fire control computer.
The CV 90 Forward Observation Vehicle is equipped with an enhanced sighting system incorporating a laser rangefinder for target detection and acquisition. The vehicle has improved communication and navigation systems. The turret has a 7.62 machine gun.
The CV 90 Forward Command Vehicle is a mobile combat C3 (command, control and communications) vehicle equipped with advanced communication and command equipment. The turret is fitted with a 7.62 mm general purpose machine gun.
The command vehicle provides accommodation for a crew of three, and additional workstations for mission crew.
The CV 90 Armoured Recovery Vehicle is operated by a crew of four and is capable of applying a 72- ton line-pull in any direction. The cupola is armed with a 7.62 machine gun. Recovery operations are carried out using two Rotzler hydraulic winches and a hydraulically operated crane. A dozer blade is fitted on the front of the vehicle.
