The standard armored personnel carrier for the mechanized brigades is still the old Pansarbandvagn 302 that first entered service during the 1960's. It's a good design but it is getting long in the tooth, which means that it needs more than its fair share of service and maintenance in order to operate. It is currently being replaced in the armored brigades (plus some other units, notably in the far north of Sweden and in and around Stockholm) by what has been described as the best vehicle of its type in the world, the new Combat Vehicle 90.
APC 302 is included in the Mechanized Brigades in several different versions. These are:
– APC 302 A for troop transport
– Combat command/control version: APC 3021
– Fire-control version: APC 3022
– Gun emplacement version: APC 3023
– Radio relay version: APC 3024.
The vehicle is of Swedish design and manufacture and was commissioned
to units for the first time in 1966. The vehicle is equipped with a 20 mm automatic gun firing anti-tank tracer/incendiary rounds.
Normal range for firing is approx. 500 m, but can be extended to 1 600 m.
Rate of fire is 20 rounds/min. The vehicle weighs approx. 20 tons, depending on version, and the crew is made up of gunner and driver. Load capacity is 1 200 kg.
Maximum road speed is 65 kph, and on-road and off-road ranges are 300 and 150 km, respectively.
APC 302 has a good off-road capability and can float.
