Seania's range of trucks for defence applications is based on the modular use of components from the company's current 4-Series range of heavy commercial models.

The 4-Series succeeded the earlier 3-series range in production during 1996. Next-generation models (not to be designated 5-Series) will begin entering commercial production mid-2005 at which time military variants will become available.

The 4-series has a GVW range from 16 to 48 tonnes and a GCW range from 16 to 150 tonnes.

Different chassis frame strength classes are available, with several axle configurations in each class. The chassis are conventional C-section in design. There is also a wide range of cab options of two major types: forward control (P and R), which includes a four-door version; and bonneted (T).

Motive power is provided by four basic Scania turbocharged and inter-cooled diesel engines, three six-cylinder in-line units and one V-configured eight-cylinder unit. Power outputs range from 220-580hp.

Driveiine options include manual gearboxes with or without crawler gears and with a conventional clutch, manual gearboxes with an automatic gear-changing system, fully automatic transmission, two-speed transfer boxes, and single or double reduction axles. For heavy-duty combinations, a gearbox with torque converter is available.

Scania produces the majority of its own driveline components in-house but recently entered an agreement with MAN Nutzfahrzeuge of Germany covering the joint development and sharing of some axles, gearboxes and transfer boxes.

In conjunction with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), Scania has developed and supplied an anti-tank mine and small-arms fire protected cab for 4-Series trucks. The 4-Series range is air-transportable by wide-body aircraft.
