The BLG-60 armoured bridgelayer was a joint development between the former East Germany and Poland. The bridge is launched in a similar fashion to the Czech/Slovak MT-55A and the reader is referred to the separate entry in Jane's Military Vehicles and Logistics for details of the bridge launching method.It should be noted that the BLG-60 and BLG-67 armoured bridgelayers were used by the East German Army and not the West German Army who uses the Leopard 1 based Biber armoured bridgelayer. A number of countries have purchased surplus BLG-60 series AVLBs. The Swedish Army, for example, purchased a total of 32 BLG-60 AVLB and as of 2010 a total of 12 remained in service under the local designation of the Brobv 971. Following the withdraw from service of the older Hagglünds Brobv 941, these BLG-60 are the only AVLB currently deployed by the Swedish Army.

In position, the bridge has a total length of 21.6 m, a width of 3.2 m and a height of 0.8 m. It can span a maximum gap of 20 m compared with the maximum span of 16 m of the MT-55A and has a maximum capacity of 50,000 kg.The main external differences between the MT-55A and the BLG-60 are that the surface of the BLG-60's bridge is smooth and covered in plastic (the MT-55A has a patterned surface), the bridge girder ends are closed (on the MT-55A they are open) and the pulley wheels for the scissors-action operating gears are solid. The BLG-60 is provided with an NBC system and a snorkel. There is also a BLG-67 bridgelayer, an updated version of the basic BLG-60, the main users being Bulgaria and Poland. The BLG-67 M2 is a special variant designed to lay two-span and three-span bridges. All its main assemblies (chassis, track bridge, span-laying gear, span-fastening system, hydraulics, electrical control system and so on) have been modified, as have the bridges.The base of the extendible arm of the span-laying gear has been lengthened and the surface on which this arm rests is lined with rubber. The edges of the roadway have been widened to provide a width of 3.47 m. Anchorages are provided on the left- and right-hand side of the base span while the bridge is being laid. The BLG-67 M2 system was carried over to the Polish PMCz-90 armoured bridgelayer based on the Russian-designed T-72M1 MBT.
