Under licence from the Russian Federation and Associated States (CIS), the original design authority, the Indian Ordnance Factories are manufacturing the UTD-20 6-cylinder diesel for the locally built RFAS BMP-2 (which has the local name of the Sarath) and the V 46-6 12-cylinder diesel for the locally built RFAS T-72M1 MBT. It is estimated that well over 2,000 engines have been built for the BMP-2 and T-72M1 in India. Production of the BMP-2 vehicle is still underway, but production of theT-72M1 MBT is complete.
Production of these diesel engines is undertaken at the Engine Factory at Avadi, Madras. As far as it is known Indian-built engines are identical to their RFAS counterparts.
