The People's Liberation Army has several minelaying heavy rocket systems in service including the NORINCO (China North Industries Corporation) 284 mm (10-round) Type 74 multiple rocket minelaying system, which is mounted on the rear platform of a CA-30A (6 × 6) truck.
This launcher comprises a 4 m long five-rail I-shaped frame system for 10 rockets with a team of four required to load each unguided rocket manually. The fin-stabilised Type 74 rockets each carry 10 plastic-cased Type 69 or Type 72 anti-tank mines in a bulbous warhead.
The Type 74 launchers are normally deployed in batteries of four, which can lay a single 400 × 400 m minefield with one salvo. The maximum range of the rocket is 1,500 m and all 10 284 mm unguided rockets can be fired within 15 seconds.
The usual crew totals six, four of whom sit behind the driver's cab on an open bench seat. A replacement wheel and tyre is stowed in the vertical position to the immediate rear of the cab on the right side. For firing, the launcher has two stabiliser legs that are lowered by crew using the manual controls at the rear of the chassis and steel shutters which are used to protect the cab windows.
A later solid propellant rocket type used is the NORINCO 284 mm Type 85 mine-laying rocket shell. This has a maximum range of 3,500 m and contains 10 anti-tank mines. A complete battery salvo has a laying zone of 700 × 500 m. The unguided solid propellant rockets are 2.6 m long and weigh 156 kg at launch.
It is understood that there has been no production of the CA-30A (6 × 6) truck for some years. If production was started again it is considered that a more recent 6 × 6 cross country chassis would be used for this system.
