Name: | Mine cleaning system |
The LWMR is primarily designed to protect an individual vehicle from buried mines and pressure initiated explosive devices.
Typically used on Medium and Light Weight Combat Vehicles, the LWMR is used to detonate and neutralise mines and buried pressure activated explosive devices ahead of the host vehicle. The system is generally used where there is the possibility, rather than the probability, of the presence of such devices on an intended route.
Hydraulic power is used to transfer a proportion of the vehicle weight onto the roller wheels in order to generate the push down force necessary to detonate explosive devices which may be present. This means Medium and Light Weight Combat Vehicles do not need to carry the excess payload of self-weight rollers.
The LWMR is comprised of two track width rollers gangs each comprising four rollers mounted on an individual swing arm suspension system. Each roller gang is free to castor and is mounted on the end of a transverse crossbeam and longitudinal linkage arrangement that allows the roller wheels free to articulate over undulating terrain. The wheel tyres are puncture proof being made from a special wear resistant semi-compliant polyurethane compound.
The LWMR is in active service around the world with the US Army, together with, amongst others, the Canadian Armed Forces.
A LWMR has three operating positions; stowed for cross-country travel, pushdown for rolling and float for maintenance purposes. A hydraulic lift cylinder stows and deploys the LWMR.
Hydraulic power is provided by an in-built electrohydraulic power system if a LWMR is fitted directly to a vehicle, or from an on-board hydraulic system that can be provided as part of a Pearson Engineering Common Interface System.
A LWMR is controlled from a Mission Equipment Control Unit (MECU) mounted within easy reach of the vehicle driver.
An optional steering system can articulate the LWMR right and left in response to MECU commands.
The LWMR can be fitted to Medium or Light Weight Combat Vehicles.
The LWMR can be rapidly attached to or detached from the vehicle and interchanged with other Special to Role equipment.
Typically Track Width for vehicle self-protection, the LWMR can be upgraded to a Full Width system by adding a Rear Roller Kit (RRK) (a single set of six individually articulating wheels), providing protection for following vehicles. Steering input commands from the RRK may also be used to automatically control the steering position of the front mounted LWMR.
An optional Magnetic System Duplicator (MSD) can be fitted to help protect the equipment from the effect of magnetic influence fused mines.
A purpose built Transportation Pallet facilitates both storage and transportation and is capable of fitting into either an ISO container or onto a DROPS pallet.
