The CV 90105 TML is a private venture development between Giat Industries of France, responsible for the TML 105 mm turret and, Hägglunds Vehicle of Sweden which is responsible for the CV 90 chassis, which is fully described in the Armoured personnel carriers (tracked) section.
The CV 90 chassis, when fitted with the Bofors 40 mm turret, is designated the CV 9040, this being the model in service with the Swedish Army.
For the export market, Hägglunds Vehicle developed the CV 9030 which has a two-man Hägglunds Vehicle turret armed with The Boeing Company 30 mm Chain Gun. This is currently in production for Norway as the CV 9030N.
Late in 1999, the Swiss Army selected the CV 9030CH to meet its future requirement, with an order to be placed for at least 186 vehicles in the future.
The TML 105 mm turret has been developed as a private venture by Giat Industries and can be installed on a wide range of chassis, tracked and wheeled. It has been installed on the chassis of the Giat Industries 105 mm AMX-10RC (6 × 6) armoured car and the Swiss MOWAG Piranha (10 × 10) armoured combat vehicle. Both of these are covered in the Reconnaissance vehicles section.
The CV 90105 TML was shown for the first time in June 1994 by which time it had already completed its firing trials. The CV 90105 TML is aimed at the export market.
More recently Giat Industries has developed a more advanced TML 105 turret which has an electrically stabilised 105 mm gun and stabilised sights. Full details of this are given in the entry for the Giat Industries VEXRA (8 × 8) 105 mm covered in detail in the following section.
The layout of the CV 90105 TML is similar to the basic CV 90, with driver front left, power pack to the right, turret in the centre and ammunition/troop compartment at the rear.
Main armament of the TML 105 mm turret system is the Giat Industries 105 mm G2 rifled gun which is ballistically identical to the combat-proven 105 mm L7/M68 gun for which ammunition is available worldwide.
The ordnance is fitted with a muzzle brake, a thermal sleeve, an integral fume extractor and a vertical sliding breech mechanism angled 20º to the left.
Turret traverse is powered through 360º with weapon elevation being powered from -7 to +19º. In total 40 105 mm rounds are carried of which 12 are for ready use in the turret.
A 7.62 mm machine gun is mounted coaxially with the main armament and there are 14 GALIX grenade launchers mounted around the front of the turret which can fire a wide range of munitions.
If required, a 7.62 mm machine gun can be fitted onto the turret roof for local and anti-aircraft defence, or different grenade dischargers can be fitted.
The commander is seated on the right and has an M389 panoramic day sight which can be traversed through a full 360º, nine HL 69 day periscopes for all-round observation and a single-piece hatch cover that opens to the rear.
The gunner is seated forward of the commander, operates the computerised fire-control system and has a day/thermal night sight with laser range-finder and two M336 day observation periscopes. The loader is seated on the left side of the turret and has a hatch cover that opens to the rear and three M223 day observation periscopes.
The standard turret weighs 4,600 kg with the armour providing protection against penetration from small arms fire up to 14.5 mm in calibre but, if required, a lower level of armour protection can be supplied.
The CV 90105 TML has a crew of four consisting of commander, gunner, loader and driver. In addition, three or four infantrymen can be carried in the rear troop compartment, which is fitted with a large door.
Standard equipment includes a driver-operated semi-active hydraulic track tensioning system, an NBC system, laser-protected optics and EMP protection. It is claimed to have a very low infra-red signature.
Optional equipment includes an air conditioning system, a fire detection/suppression system for the crew compartment, additional armour and a 105 mm weapon stabilisation system.
