Designation:

CV9040 Chameleon

Info
Manufacturer: BAE Systems Land Systems Hagglunds AB
Product type: Armoured Vehicles
Name: Anti-aircraft system

Self-propelled anti-aircraft vehicle CV-9040 was developed at the beginning of 90-ties. It is based on CV-90 infantry fighting vehicle chassis. It's tests were made in 1993. Now it is produced serially and supplied to Sweden armed forces instead of out-dated anti-aircraft vehicle VEAK-4062.

It's arrangement is similar to CV-90: engine-transmission compartment is placed in the front part, from the right board. Left from the engine there is placed driving compartment. Landing and combat compartments were rebuilt to new combat compartment, placed in the two-seat turret with armament and ammunition load.

The hull and the turret are welded from steel armor plates. Frontal armor protects crew from small caliber guns armor-piercing rounds, board armor - from firearms and projectile and mine shells.

Self propelled vehicle is armed with L70B (40/70B), 40-mm automatic gun, which is a modified "Bofors" 40-mm anti-aircraft gun, which entered service in 1951. Main gun is placed in the turret. Magazine is reloading from the bottom. Cartridge cases are ejected forward and up from the hatch in the turret. Main gun is fitted with conical flame-hider. It's power absorbing device is covered with armored plates. Ammunition is supplied from 24 round box magazines. Gun is reloaded manually during 20 seconds from ammunition storage placed in the turret's walls and on the floor.

Main gun has elevation range from -8 to +50 degrees. It is inclined by electric devices, duplicated with manual ones.

Air targets are defeated using standard fragmentation rounds MK2 and redeveloped rounds 3R. Round MK2 is fitted with distance detonator and blasts 1 000 already prepared sphere shape shells plus to 3 000 it's body shells. Round 3R also has prepared shells. The main difference is that 3R has programmable detonator. Detonation time is inserted with induction reel, when round is inserted into the barrel. Maximum inclined range of fire to air targets is 4 000 m, however CV-9040 is the most effective in 2 000 - 3 000 m range.

Ground targets are defeated with High-Explosion fragmentation and armor-piercing rounds. Last mentioned are fitted with Wolfram core. It's initial speed is 1 600 m/s and armor-piercing - up to 140 mm. High-Explosion fragmentation rounds are initially cut to make a great number of shells during explosion.

Fire control system includes TSR-2620 "Gerfaut" radiolocation station for targets notifying and tracking, developed by French company "Thomson-CSF"; laser rangefinder, ballistic computer and also electronic-optical sight with visible and infrared diapason. It allows to fire, when enemy use radio electronic counteraction.

TRS-2620 is a Doppler effect based, 360 degree view radiolocation station. It works in millimeter band and provides air target notifying range up to 14 000 m. Radiolocation antenna is mounted on the turret roof under radio transparent cupola. CV-9040 additional armament consists from 7.62-mm coaxial machine-gun. It is fitted with smoke grenade launchers from the both turret sides to set smoke screens.

CV-9040 is fitted with DS-14 engine developed by "SAAB-Scania". It is fitted with turbocharger and reaches maximum power of 550 h.p. at 2 200 rounds per minute. Automatic hydro mechanic transmission is X300-4B was developed by British company "Perkins Engines". It has four forward and two backward gears. It is developed by Sweden "Volvo" company under license.

Chassis use independent torsion suspension. Seven rubber laid bearing rolls are placed from each side. Tracks are steel, small exuviates, with rubber-metallic hinge. On road vehicle reaches maximum speed of 70 km/h. It has good cross-country performance. CV-9040 manage 37° slopes, 1.2 m vertical walls, 2.9 m wide trenches. Water obstacles are managed by assembling inflatable rubber floats from both boards. Vehicle moves on the water by overwinding tracks.
