Description

The Oerlikon Contraves 25 mm Type KBB cannon has been developed as a multipurpose cannon capable of being mounted on a variety of weapon mounts including those on vehicles. It is a gas-operated weapon with a supporting snaplock and two parallel, common direction ammunition feed mechanisms opposite each other. The required belted ammunition type can be fired by swinging the corresponding feed mechanism into position. The cannon is fixed to the recoil cradle by two removable pins and the ammunition guides are also fixed to the cradle. Thus the cannon body is floating to reduce some of the recoil forces. The rifling system employs the Oerlikon Contraves progressive twist system. It fires the 25 x 181 mm rounds including HEI, TP, TP-T, APDS-T, TPDS-T and AMDS.

Status

Production as required. Has been fitted on Sea Zenith naval anti-missile defence system (which uses four KBB cannon). The KBB is also installed in the CMI C 25 two-man, power-operated turret described in the AFV turrets and cupolas section. As far as it is known, there are no production land applications for this weapon by mid-1999, although marketing continues.
