Abu Zaabal Engineering Industries, in co-operation with Royal Ordnance Nottingham of the UK, is now offering 115 mm smoothbore tank barrels for the Russian designed and built T-62 MBT. This is essentially a reverse-engineered Russian U-5TS (2A20) gun using new technology.
The original Russian barrel manufacturing technique was to shrink fit the sleeve/liner; the new method is to use the autofrettage technique. This is claimed to be a simpler, more effective method of production which gives a greater barrel fatigue life.
Full details of the barrel are given under the Royal Ordnance 115 mm Tank Gun Barrel under the UK. The specifications given below are from Egyptian sources.
Note: Abu Zaabal Engineering Industries is also involved in production of the Royal Ordnance 105 mm T-54/T-55 upgrade package covered under the UK later in this section, local production of the 122 mm D-30 towed howitzer and the Chinese 130 mm Type 59 field gun.
More recently Abu Zaabal Engineering Industries has supplied the complete mount and 122 mm ordnance used in the 122 mm SP122 self-propelled artillery systems built in the US by United Defense LP for the Egyptian Army. It also provides the 122 mm ordnance for installation in a locally designed turret which is then mounted on a T-55 MBT chassis.
Production as required. In service with the Egyptian Army. There are no known exports of this 115 mm barrel.
