Description
Designed as a light gun to fire fin-stabilised projectiles, the 105 mm F2 rifled tank gun has a very light barrel with shallow rifling. The semi-automatic breech has a vertical sliding wedge breech block and electrical firing. Just behind and above the double-baffle muzzle brake is a fixed muzzle reference mirror to detect barrel warping. A single hydropneumatic cylinder mounted on the left side of the gun acts as the recoil brake. The recuperator cylinder is on the right-hand side.
More recently Giat Industries has developed an APFSDS round which can be fired by the 105 mm F2 (MECA) gun.
The 105 mm F2 guns installed in the AMX-10RC (6 x 6) vehicles of the French Army were to have been replaced by the rifled 105 mm 105 G2 gun covered earlier. Production of this gun is undertaken at the Giat Industries facility at Bourges.
Status
Production as required. Fitted only to the AMX-10RC (6 x 6) reconnaissance vehicle which is in service with France, Morocco and Qatar. As the AMX-10RC is no longer being marketed by Giat Industries it is not expected that there will be any significant future production of this gun.
