Name: Self-propelled howitzer

Self-propelled howitzer on a wheeled chassis 6x6 with an artillery 155-mm NATO standard system.

The development of the vehicle was started in 2011, when an agreement on developments related to light-wheeled self-propelled 155-mm howitzer was concluded, with guaranteed financing of 28.2 million zł. Huta Stalowa Wola became an organization that was supposed to implement the program.

Initially, it was assumed that the Kryl SPH will be created in cooperation with the company Nexter, while the Polish decision was based on the artillery of the Caesar CPH. After the technical analysis, a competitive Israeli solution was chosen, the howitzer ATMOS 2000, proposed by Elbit. Both solutions, technically similar, assumed that the ammunition would be loaded manually and that the crew would remain in the open area while conducting artillery fire. The Israeli proposal convinced the Polish partners with the following arguments: the Israelis claimed that their business proposal was more flexible and that the ATMOS system would provide the user with a wider angle of fire in the azimuth. Moreover, the supplier, according to HSW, Israel was more open and to proposed technology transfer, agreeing that Poland will not purchase together with the artillery and chassis also.

The wheeled chassis 6x6 was supposed to be developed from white sheet, especially since HSW SA in April 2012 adopted the Jelcz-Laskowice plant, which produces military trucks. The new chassis was developed under the Jelcz 663 project.

One of the features of the Kryl was the possibility of its transportation by air inside the C-130.

According to the plans developed in 2012, the work on the creation of Kryl was to be completed by the end of December 2015. Later, the above assumptions were corrected, and the deadline was postponed until the last quarter of 2018, which would make it possible to start serial production in 2019. Eventually, when the updated Technical Modernization Plan was announced, this stage of work was planned to be completed on August 27, 2020.
