The Type 60 122mm towed gun was developed in the late 1950s as a standard artillery weapon to provide direct/indirect fire. It was found in the gun battalion of artillery regiments organic at motorised infantry and armoured division level. Only a small number of this weapon still remain in service, mainly with reserve and militia units.
